I could have, but the sister superior who ran the women's shelter owed me a favor, so she got me in there. -It was... way easier to think of it in those terms than the fact someone took pity on her...-

That's good to hear. I know a guy who used to live on the streets. It isn't somewhere anyone ought to be.

[Even if it's unavoidable sometimes.]

I mean... I've been homeless before, so it's not like I couldn't handle it. -She sighs.- That's life for a street kid, you know?

[Their living conditions, at least, were total opposites during childhood. So she'll never understand that.

Still, it isn't the point...it's less about whether or not people can handle it and more they shouldn't have to.

I've always thought the Mayor did a lousy job funding support for the homeless around here.

Yeah, well... the mayor before him probably did a shitty job, too. And the one before that. And all the way down. We're invisible to people with money and power. They just keep finding new ways to make us go away.
